Good morning, Everydayers. It’s Tuesday of Georgia week, and both head coaches talked Monday. Pete Golding isn’t expecting Kewan Lacy on Saturday night. Kirby Smart called Trinidad Chambliss probably the best quarterback in the country. And tonight, the first College Football Playoff rankings come out. Today’s LOOM Flagship has all of it.
☕ Morning Coffee
“Let’s see who blinks.”
That’s how Steven closed today’s LOOM Flagship. Georgia has the sacks and the game manager. Ole Miss has the quarterback the other coach just called probably the best in the country, plus the crowd that coach is worried about. Three things from Monday:
- Pete Golding gave away the plan for beating Georgia. First the news: “We’re not expecting to have him this week,” he said of Lacy, so the backfield that ran for 224 yards against Auburn is the plan again. Then he explained last season. In Athens the defense “didn’t communicate very well,” missed tackles and gave up explosive passes. In the Sugar Bowl it stopped the run on early downs, forced turnovers and made two big fourth-down stops. His line of the week: “If you can’t stop the run versus those guys, it’s a long night.” He called Gunner Stockton “an elite game manager” who doesn’t beat himself, which means Ole Miss has to take the ball away, not wait for it.
- The most interesting thing Golding said was about his own quarterback. What changed for Chambliss after halftime against Auburn? He had to “quit trying to live up to this expectation and all this hype.” He went 13 of 19 for 163 yards and two touchdowns after that. Steven’s take: “Not the hype version, the free version.” Golding also said a road night game costs the visitor “almost a day and a half” of preparation, and that he won’t watch tonight’s rankings. Ole Miss will “look up in December.” The goal is a December game in Oxford, not a December game on an airplane.
- Kirby Smart spent his press conference talking up Ole Miss. Asked how you defend Chambliss, his first words were “How long you got?” He called him pinpoint accurate, said his anticipation is “probably unmatched” and that his pocket presence doesn’t get enough credit. Then came Georgia’s plan: “You’re not like tricking the guy.” Tackle, bat balls, force turnovers, win third down. The matchup to watch is Georgia’s 26 sacks against an Ole Miss line that hasn’t allowed one in 137 pass-blocking snaps. And Smart called Oxford “an atmosphere that’s extremely hard to play in.”
