🎖️ Legend Speaks: Bill Flowers

Ole Miss legend Bill Flowers joined Wednesday’s Locked On Ole Miss, and his key for Saturday comes down to one man. On Austin Simmons: “If you let him sit back, he’ll pick you apart.” His fix is “pressure, pressure, pressure” until Missouri makes mistakes. He also called Cayden Lee Simmons’ “pacifier.”

There’s zero SEC teams that are bad.

Bill Flowers, on what the 52-17 win at Vanderbilt really meant

On Kewan Lacy: “Having Lacy is a game changer.” On Blake Purchase, he called the Oregon transfer plug and play, a player without a high-profile name who “just absolutely increases the value of your defense.” And he expects “a good boxing match” on Saturday. Bill Flowers’ call: Ole Miss 42, Missouri 28.

Bill’s calls are his own. Every statistic in this newsletter comes from the Ole Miss game notes.

“This isn’t LSU.”

That is Steven on today’s crossover with Locked On Mizzou, on the three former Rebels who come back to Oxford with Missouri on Saturday. Ole Miss fans, he says, appreciate Austin Simmons, Cayden Lee and Chris Graves Jr. and “the professionalism that they showed.” His verdict: “This isn’t a revenge game one way or another.”

What it is, he says, is “a playoff elimination game.” Whoever leaves Oxford with a second loss still has Georgia on the schedule. Locked On Mizzou agreed on both counts, and today’s episode takes Saturday from both sides.

🔀 Both Sides: The Crossover

Chambliss is a different challenge. He really is.

Locked On Mizzou, on Trinidad Chambliss
  • Missouri’s plan: Locked On Mizzou expects Missouri to give up 300 passing yards to Chambliss, hold Kewan Lacy to 50 rushing yards or fewer, and make Ole Miss settle for field goals. Locked On Mizzou’s call: Missouri 28, Ole Miss 24.
  • Ole Miss’s plan: “speed Austin up” with pressure at the mesh point and lost-yardage plays that create third-and-long. Steven: “You cannot sit back and rush 3, drop 8, and just let him pick out holes in the zone.”
  • X-factors: tight end Caleb Odom on RPOs into the space Missouri’s linebackers leave, and receiver Caleb Cunningham, who Steven says “is going to pop one.”

📊 Chasing History

  • Trinidad Chambliss has thrown a touchdown pass in 18 straight games, third-longest in school history. One more ties Matt Corral. He is also 23 passing yards from the Ole Miss career top 10 and 40 from John Fourcade at No. 9.
  • Kewan Lacy has a rushing touchdown in 13 straight games played, the longest by an Ole Miss player since records began in 1956. His 29 career rushing touchdowns are third in school history.
  • The red zone: Ole Miss has 18 touchdowns and two field goals on 20 trips.
  • Missouri’s run defense allows 78.3 rushing yards a game, which is why stopping Lacy is the center of Missouri’s plan.
  • The series: Missouri leads 7-1. Ole Miss’s only win was 10-0 in 1974, and Saturday is the first meeting in Oxford since 2013.
