Three days out from Georgia, Wednesday’s show had exactly one place to start — the single key that decides Saturday night in Vaught-Hemingway — before a quick trip next door to the Pavilion, where both Ole Miss basketball teams opened their seasons the very same way. Here’s the rundown, Everydayers. Hotty Toddy.
The one key, and it isn’t close: stop the run
The number one key for Ole Miss against Georgia isn’t close, and the show didn’t pretend otherwise: stop the run. Pete Golding laid it out Monday, and the whole episode was built around it. Georgia doesn’t need a 60-yard bomb to beat you — it needs second-and-4, third-and-2, a quick first down, and it will do that over and over until your defense breaks. Death by a thousand cuts. Golding called Gunner Stockton an elite game manager who takes what the defense gives him and doesn’t beat himself, and said the Bulldogs will happily eat up the clock four and five yards at a time.
The counter is first down. Win it, and Georgia is suddenly in second-and-9 and third-and-7, forced to throw into a pass rush that just piled up sacks and takeaways against Auburn. “Make every single drive for them feel hard, feel laborious, feel like work” was the whole ask — and the show put a number on it: hold Georgia under 125 rushing yards and Ole Miss wins this fairly easily; let it climb past that and it gets tricky in a hurry.
The number that actually tells the story: punts
Ask Will Echoles for the one number that tells you who’s winning Saturday and it isn’t yards — it’s punts. Echoles pointed back to last year’s two meetings: in Athens, Ole Miss never got Georgia off the field and the Bulldogs didn’t punt the entire game; in the Sugar Bowl, Ole Miss forced the punts and won. A team that never punts is a team that never had a bad first down. So count the punts, especially early, and let a packed Vaught-Hemingway do the rest.
Golding called out his linebackers by name and essentially put the game on them — be physical up front, stay sound at the second level, and take the right angles, the discipline that slipped away late in the Texas loss. There’s a tell in the history, too: Kirby Smart has never beaten Ole Miss outside of Athens, going 0-3 in Oxford and the Sugar Bowl. If Georgia is punting Saturday night, Ole Miss is probably playing exactly the game it wants.
The warning label
The honest caveat the show didn’t skip: the run defense gives and it takes away. Both of Ole Miss’s losses this year — Florida and Texas — came in games where somebody ran for more than 200 yards, and Georgia just gashed Florida for 217 on the ground last weekend. Even the good tape came with a warning: against Auburn, Ole Miss held a back who arrived with 480 rushing yards to just five more and stacked up tackles for loss, but Golding flagged first-half communication issues on third down that let Auburn extend drives early. You don’t get to fix that at halftime against Georgia — you have to come out right.
For context, Vegas has Ole Miss as roughly a 3.5-point underdog at home Saturday night. The framing of the stakes was blunt and familiar: it’s host, not host, or miss it entirely — and it all starts on first down.
Over at the Pavilion: both hoops teams opened the same way
Both basketball teams opened 2-0 on Monday, and both did it the exact way the football team needs to Saturday: by making the other team miserable. Chris Beard’s men ran past Alcorn State 99-58, and the number that mattered wasn’t 99 — it was 26 forced turnovers, and it was the plan. Beard’s take: defense isn’t guarding until they shoot and hoping they miss, it’s getting the ball before they shoot. Bud Clark ran the point for 17 points and 7 assists, and Patton Pinkins buried 3 of 4 from deep.
The women were every bit as stingy, with Yolett McPhee-McCuin’s team winning 80-38 and Donella Washington blocking seven shots. Next up: the women host North Alabama on Thursday night, the men play Friday — the night before kickoff — so Oxford is loaded all weekend, Pavilion on Friday and Vaught-Hemingway on Saturday.
