Bill Flowers Says A First-Round Projection Is Why Trinidad Chambliss Stopped Running

Georgia arrives at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday night with a 3-3-5 defense, and its head coach and defensive coordinator will see Trinidad Chambliss for a third time. Ole Miss plays a 4-2-5 base that asks its safeties to come down and make plays. Auburn played more two-man coverage in Oxford than Ole Miss opponents usually risk, and Chambliss made it pay after halftime.

Locked On Ole Miss host Steven Willis built the episode around former Ole Miss receiver Bill Flowers, who argued the drop in Chambliss’s carries is a choice, not an accident. Flowers said a quarterback with a first-round projection to protect has every incentive to stay healthy, and that what has gone missing is the disregard for his own safety Chambliss showed a year ago.

Flowers argued that the Ole Miss offense is predicated on a quarterback who runs, and that nearly every defense now plays nickel to take the short passing game away. “If you don’t hurt them by being that extra runner, you hamstring yourself,” he said, tying it to a run game that has lagged all season. Chambliss, he said, took the problem on himself in the second half against Auburn.

No alignment solves it, Flowers said, because a quarterback who reads coverage and then takes off dismantles a defense whatever the call. He wants Ole Miss aggressive with its safeties against the Georgia run game. If Rebels linebackers are meeting ball carriers three yards beyond the line of scrimmage, he said, Ole Miss loses. He would rather be beaten through the air than on the ground.

Flowers picked Ole Miss 27-21 and said the game turns on the trenches and time of possession, not explosive plays. He expects Chambliss to run more against Georgia than at any point this season.
