Ole Miss closed its 45-15 win over Auburn with 28 straight points, tying a program record. Auburn had cut the margin to 17-15 in the third quarter. The Rebels held Auburn to 63 rushing yards on 27 carries, converted 13 of 16 third downs, allowed no sacks and recovered two forced fumbles. Ole Miss punted once.
Locked On Ole Miss host Steven Willis spent Monday’s episode on what that win does not prove about Georgia. Georgia’s only loss came at home to Auburn, 27-24, and Ole Miss just beat Auburn by 30. Willis called that a fun fact and a trap: Florida beat Ole Miss 52-28 in September, and Georgia then beat Florida by 19. Transitive property, he argued, does not work in football.
What does carry over, Willis said, is the blueprint. Auburn averaged 2.3 yards a carry. Stop the run, protect the quarterback, win third down and take the ball away were his four requirements, against a Georgia team that beat Florida behind 218 rushing yards and four takeaways.
Trinidad Chambliss, under 10 rushing yards in each of his previous three games, ran seven times for 65 yards and a 26-yard touchdown, and went 13 of 19 for 163 yards and two scores after halftime. Horatio Fields caught six passes for 73 yards and a 28-yard touchdown, and Caleb Cunningham six for 55 and a score. Ole Miss ran for 224 yards without Kewan Lacy.
Georgia visits Oxford on Saturday night, and Ole Miss is an underdog at home. Willis said the market’s read is the point: a December game in Oxford, or one on an airplane. A win would be the 17th straight at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, a program record, and one more touchdown pass would tie Chad Kelly’s school mark of 22.
