Shekai Mills-Knight gave the shortest answer of the weekend, and it was the best one.
Asked whether a career-high rushing day against Auburn had boosted his confidence, he did not elaborate, hedge, or thank anybody.
“I already had that.”
That was the whole response. The rest of the press conference explained where it came from.
“The moment wasn’t too big”
Mills-Knight took 36 snaps and 16 carries with Kewan Lacy out — the first time this season he has been the featured back. Asked how he adjusted mentally to the jump in volume, he credited the thing most players describe as a demotion.
“Just staying level-headed. I feel like, you know, just being on scout team playing against one of the best defenses from last year and this year just made me ready. So when I stepped up in game time, it really just wasn’t too big for me. So the moment wasn’t too big.”
He made the same point again later, when asked whether it is hard to find a rhythm as a back who knows he might only get one or two carries.
“Not really, because I go against our defense every day, and I feel like we have one of the best defenses in the country. So it wasn’t a hard adjustment for me.”
On “running through jokers”
Keaton Thomas had described those scout-team reps a few minutes earlier, and the phrase was put to Mills-Knight directly.
“Just running hard, running through him, running through anyone in front of me. I’m a big back, so I just had to run hard and lower my pads down.”
He is listed at 6-foot-3, 235 pounds — the dimensions Pete Golding pointed to when explaining why defenses load up against him. Asked directly whether he enjoys contact, he did not really answer, which was its own kind of answer.
Why he stayed
The most pointed question he got was about the portal. Kewan Lacy was coming back. The staff brought in more backs. Plenty of players in that position look elsewhere.
“I just fell in love with the Sip since I was a recruit, and I just stayed true to it. And I knew, like, my time would come, so I just kept working. I love everything. I love the offense. And the coaching staff.”
He then described last season in terms that were notably free of grievance.
“I just stayed prayed up. And I know we had the best running back in the nation. So it just — it was just like watching greatness. I wasn’t too mad. I just stayed ready. Just learned from what he did and added to my game. Stay patient, whatever the team needed me to do.”
On Lacy specifically: “He’s a great dude, just always inspired me to be great every day. And I just took the things that he did and added it to, like, my routine.”
The part the grades back up
Asked what “playing without the football” looks like for him — the phrase Golding used to explain his emergence — Mills-Knight gave a one-sentence answer.
“Whatever the team needs me to do. I stepped up on special teams, just in pass pro, whatever the team needs me to do.”
That is the least glamorous sentence in this entire press conference and it is the one the grade sheet confirms hardest. Mills-Knight’s pass-blocking grade against Auburn was 76.6. Makhi Frazier, who played six more snaps, graded 34.0. He also out-graded Frazier as a runner, 73.9 to 65.2, and finished with the better overall mark, 73.7 to 63.3.
Frazier played more. Mills-Knight played better.
On Caleb Cunningham, his roommate
The two arrived together as highly rated recruits and spent last season waiting. They were also roommates.
“That was my roommate when we came in, and just seeing his growth and how much more focused he’s become — just going on the jugs machines, taking recovery serious. It’s just been great, man. He has unbelievable potential… iron sharpens iron. We motivate each other every day.”
Cunningham graded 74.7 against Auburn, fourth on the offense and best among the receivers, on 26 snaps.
Two players who spent a year on the scout team, both grading near the top of their units on the same afternoon. That is the argument Ole Miss has been making to recruits, and on Saturday it had two pieces of evidence standing at the same podium.
