Ole Miss Has Four Of Its Last Five At Home, And Winning Out Points Toward Atlanta

Ole Miss is 5-2 with five games left, four of them at home. Auburn visits Saturday, Georgia follows in Oxford, and the only road trip left is at Oklahoma before Wofford and Mississippi State close the year in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The Rebels have won 15 straight at home and are 38-3 there since 2021.

Locked On Ole Miss host Steven Willis argued that the hand-wringing over the loss in Austin has obscured what is still in front of this team. His case is that a five-game run to finish the season would not only put Ole Miss in the playoff but likely send the Rebels to Atlanta for the SEC Championship Game.

Trinidad Chambliss said after Texas that Ole Miss has to win out. Asked about it Monday, Pete Golding held both halves of the thought, saying what Chambliss said can be looked at but that it starts with Tuesday’s practice, then Wednesday’s, then Thursday’s walk-through. Willis called that a mature answer: nobody wins five games on a Tuesday.

The conference math runs through Kentucky. Willis said Kentucky will likely lose a game in its final month, leaving the SEC without an 11-1 team, and that if Ole Miss then wins out, Georgia included, every league team would carry two losses. Because of the schedule Ole Miss has played, he argued, the Rebels would hold the best tiebreaker percentage of that group.

Willis did not call any of it easy. Auburn beat Georgia in Athens two weeks ago, and he said Oklahoma is a hard trip even while struggling offensively. His path: handle the games Ole Miss is favored by double digits to win, beat Georgia at home, win in Norman, and host a playoff game in December. He offered no final score, asking listeners for theirs.
