Bill Flowers Fears The Auburn Quarterback Starts Running, And Ole Miss Does Not Adjust

Ole Miss hosts Auburn on Halloween with 15 straight home wins on the line. The Rebels lost at Texas in a game that came down to a Hail Mary, and the deciding damage was two explosive fourth-quarter runs, the same breakdown seen against Florida and Louisville. Trinidad Chambliss went 6-of-18 with two interceptions in the first half. Auburn arrives in Oxford having beaten Georgia.

Locked On Ole Miss host Steven Willis argued the game belongs to Ole Miss rather than Auburn: if both teams play their best, he said, Auburn cannot win it. Willis also turned the quarterback-run question back on his own team, noting Chambliss passed up runs at Texas that were there to take.

Former Ole Miss receiver Bill Flowers said his biggest concern is Auburn’s quarterback deciding to run. Flowers argued the quarterback has been throwing when he should run because an NFL evaluation has him building film as a pocket passer. If he turns into a run-first threat who can still throw, Flowers said, Ole Miss’s edges are in trouble.

Flowers also wants a heavier front available. Ole Miss has to be willing to drop into an old-school four-man look, stack the box and stop worrying about the pass, he said, and he does not expect the staff to do it. He pointed to the fourth quarter at Texas, when the run was all Texas had left and nothing changed. Flowers would hold Kewan Lacy out until the playoffs.

Flowers predicted 36-21 Ole Miss, with the Rebels taking charge early. He expects the quarterback run to be a bigger problem than it has been all season, which puts the weight on a defense that has not solved explosive runs. Ole Miss can make it 16 straight at home Saturday.
