Kewan Lacy dislocated his shoulder at Texas and will not play against Auburn on Saturday. Pete Golding said there is “no chance that we’re going to try that at all this week.” It is the shoulder Lacy hurt against LSU, but Golding said the injury was different and worse. Lacy set Ole Miss single-season records with 306 carries, 1,567 yards and 24 touchdowns.
Locked On Ole Miss host Steven Willis argued the biggest replacement is not a back. Trinidad Chambliss ran for seven yards at Texas, a third straight game under 10, and Golding said of the quarterback run game, “I think you’ll see a little more of that moving forward.” Without Lacy, Willis said, Chambliss may be Ole Miss’s best runner.
Golding named Makhi Frazier first. Frazier ran for 101 yards on 15 carries against Missouri, then 47 on six carries at Texas after Lacy went down, including a 34-yarder. Golding said a change-of-pace back who scored a 35-yard touchdown against Vanderbilt will also get a chance. Terez Davis, who did not play at Texas, is expected back at left tackle.
Golding called his defense “very inconsistent.” Texas ran for 121 of its rushing yards in the fourth quarter from the 10:30 mark on, and Golding pointed to two plays with missed tackles in the hole. “I’m not mad that we missed the tackle. They’re not perfect. They’re going to miss tackles. It’s how we missed the tackle,” he said, faulting the side they missed to. He called a Sunday night meeting a come-to-Jesus.
Auburn arrives at 4-3, having beaten Georgia in Athens before losing at home to LSU. Golding’s key is eliminating the quarterback run game to force passing downs against a quarterback with seven interceptions; Ole Miss has five picks in three games. Ole Miss has won 15 straight at Vaught-Hemingway, and a win Saturday sets up Georgia in Oxford on Nov. 7.
