Texas Has Led By Double Digits In Both Of Its Losses, And Ole Miss Comes To Austin Saturday

Ole Miss plays at Texas on Saturday night. The Longhorns have lost twice by three points apiece after leading by double digits in each — 17-7 at halftime against Oklahoma, 17-3 late in the first half against Florida. Across those two second halves Texas was outscored 37-4, and it has not reached 25 points against a power-conference opponent all year.

Locked On Ole Miss host Steven Willis is uneasy anyway: if both teams play their best, Willis argued, he does not know Ole Miss wins in Austin — but the Texas of the last two weeks, against the Ole Miss of the last two weeks, could lose by three scores. The Locked On Longhorns host said that might not be enough.

Texas has not been able to run it: no Longhorn back has gone for 75 yards in a game. Texas ranks 126th in plays of 20 yards or more and has not forced a turnover in its three SEC games. Florida blitzed 61 percent of its snaps, and the Longhorns host said the line looked as if it had never seen one.

Willis pointed at what Pete Golding did to Missouri: seven defenders on the line of scrimmage every snap, no telling who was coming. Golding’s framing, Willis relayed: indecision is the friend of the defense. Ole Miss won that game by 28 while Trinidad Chambliss missed open receivers — on a better night, Willis said, the Rebels score 50.

Willis picked Ole Miss 31-27, expecting an early lead and a late score. The Longhorns host took Texas 27-24 and conceded he had no reason beyond a conference in which nothing has made sense. Win in Austin, Willis said, and the only genuinely hard game left is Georgia in Oxford, where Ole Miss has won 15 straight.
