Ole Miss travels to Texas as an underdog on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC, a week after beating a ranked opponent by four touchdowns. Kewan Lacy grew up a Texas fan and wanted to play for the Longhorns, who never recruited him. He signed with Missouri, then transferred to Ole Miss, and arrives in Austin as the back this offense leans on.
Locked On Ole Miss host Steven Willis argued Lacy is the biggest difference for the Rebels on Saturday, asking what a hyper-motivated version of him would look like in Austin. Willis also said Ole Miss has to start quickly against a team playing without confidence, because once Texas finds any, the Rebels must handle all of that talent.
Former Ole Miss receiver Bill Flowers said Lacy is as much of a difference-maker as Trinidad Chambliss in how the offense flows, pointing to his speed and his knack for forcing missed tackles. Flowers argued that controlling the offensive narrative and scoring at will separates Ole Miss from the rest of the SEC, provided the defense stays sound.
Flowers recognized the position from his own recruitment. He wanted Texas out of high school, the Longhorns took the top three receivers in the country instead and never gave him a look, and he signed with Ole Miss. A player of Lacy’s caliber, Flowers said, will carry a chip on his shoulder and make Texas pay for the mistake.
Flowers picked Ole Miss 42-21, warning that a team on the edge of losing its season comes out with everything it has. Willis called Texas one of the more talented teams Ole Miss will see all year, even if the Longhorns are not playing like it, and said the margin comes from jumping on them early.
