Locked On Ole Miss — Game Week Preview: Texas (Saturday, October 24)

Everydayers, this is the one we circled back in August. No. 7 Ole Miss (5-1, 2-1 SEC) hits the road Saturday night to take on No. 19 Texas (4-2) under the lights in Austin. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT / 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC from Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium. A primetime window, a top-20 showdown, and a Rebel team playing its best football of the season — this is exactly the kind of stage you want to be on in late October. Buckle up. Hotty Toddy.

The Matchup

Two teams headed in opposite directions meet in the Lone Star State. Ole Miss is rolling at 5-1, fresh off a homecoming win over then-No. 13 Missouri that pushed the Rebels up to No. 7 in this week’s AP Top 25. Texas, meanwhile, comes in at 4-2 and sliding — the Longhorns have dropped two straight and tumbled down the poll to No. 19. Pete Golding’s bunch gets a ranked road opponent that is reeling, but a wounded team in its own building at night in the SEC is never a gimme. This is the Rebels’ chance to make a statement that the preseason hype was real.

Texas This Week

The Longhorns are in a genuine rough patch. After entering the year as a national title contender, Texas has lost back-to-back games — first to Oklahoma in the Red River rivalry, then a road setback at Florida — and the heat is squarely on quarterback Arch Manning. The numbers haven’t matched the hype, and head coach Steve Sarkisian spent this week publicly backing his quarterback while the outside noise about the offense got louder. A desperate, talented team playing at home in prime time is dangerous, but a defense that has given up big plays and an offense still searching for rhythm is exactly the profile Ole Miss wants to see across the field.

What to Watch for the Rebels

It starts with the guys who have carried this team all year. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has been the steadying hand of the offense, and running back Kewan Lacy has powered his way into the thick of the Doak Walker Award race with the kind of bruising, every-down production that travels well on the road. If the Rebels can lean on Lacy to control the clock and keep a hostile crowd out of it early, they take a ton of pressure off everyone. On the other side, Golding’s defense will try to make Manning uncomfortable and force Texas into the kind of mistakes that have defined its two-game skid. Win the trenches, win the turnover battle, and Ole Miss is in great shape.

What It Means for Ole Miss

Make no mistake — this is a playoff-résumé game. A road win over a ranked Texas team in prime time would be a signature line on the Rebels’ College Football Playoff case and would tell the committee everything about who this team is. At 5-1 and No. 7, Ole Miss controls its own destiny, but you don’t get many chances to steal one in Austin on national television. The Everydayers know what’s at stake. Let’s go get it.
