“We’re a step late right now.”

That is Pete Golding on Monday, two days after his defense forced four turnovers in a 52-17 win at Vanderbilt. He was not talking about the four it got. He was talking about the ones it dropped.

Golding’s point is about this Saturday. “When you play better teams that aren’t going to give you the football, like you got to go take it away.” No. 13 Missouri is that team, and by his count Austin Simmons has turned it over once all season. Today’s LOOM Flagship goes through the whole press conference, one “He Said What?” moment at a time.

🎙️ He Said What?

We had some missed opportunities in that game to actually take the ball away. Like, we’re dropping those right there.

Pete Golding, on four takeaways

I think he has the most yards after contact right now, which is something that, you know, has been an issue for us on tape.

That’s the first game this year that we came out and the offensive line was — all 5 were the player of the game.

It’s our responsibility to create more opportunities for them.

🔄 The Reunion

Missouri brings three players to Oxford who were Rebels last season: quarterback Austin Simmons, receiver Cayden Lee and defensive back Chris Graves Jr. Golding called them three guys who “started here for us, you know, on a playoff football team.”

He also explained why two of them left. On Simmons: “You play quarterback, we play one of them. All right, here’s an appeal process going on. He couldn’t take that risk.” Lee, he said, “wasn’t comfortable yet knowing whether the appeal was going to go through or not.” Sports Illustrated reported in January that Trinidad Chambliss’s pending NCAA waiver forced Simmons’ hand.

Lee left Ole Miss with 106 catches for 1,623 yards and seven touchdowns in three seasons, per the Daily Journal. Golding says Missouri’s pass game now “goes through” him, and that he knows what Ole Miss does on defense. And on Graves, Golding wished him luck, “other than this week.”

One more: Kewan Lacy started his career at Missouri. Golding’s reaction when asked about it: “I forgot about that, to be honest with you.”

🏈 The Plan

  • The offensive line won player of the game, all five of them, a first this season. Ole Miss ran for 196 yards in Nashville.
  • Terez Davis, per Golding: “I would say right now he’s playing elite football.”
  • Right tackle: Tommy Kinsler IV “came out of pregame and wasn’t in a great spot,” so Connor Howes took every snap. Golding: “I think he’s played his butt off.”
  • Shekai Mills-Knight is in line for more touches after his 35-yard touchdown. Golding called him “a different dimension back there from a size-speed standpoint.”
  • The backfield: Lacy will be managed the same way as last week, with Makhi Frazier and JT Lindsey giving Ole Miss “3 guys that we can roll in.”
  • Injury: safety Edwin Joseph Jr. has an ankle sprain and is getting a second opinion today. Golding said he could potentially miss Missouri.
