Locked On Ole Miss — Game Week Preview: Missouri (Saturday, October 17)

Locked On Ole Miss preview — Ole Miss vs Missouri

It’s Homecoming week in Oxford, and the SEC handed us a heavyweight. No. 9 Ole Miss (4-1) hosts No. 13 Missouri (5-1) on Saturday, October 17, with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m. CT at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The league hadn’t locked the TV window as of this writing — it’s headed for ABC, ESPN or the SEC Network. Two top-15 teams, both 2-1 in conference play, both walking in off blowout wins. This is the kind of Saturday that can swing a season. Hotty Toddy.

The Matchup

Both of these teams are peaking at the right time. Ole Miss just went into Nashville and dropped 52 on Vanderbilt in a 52-17 rout, with Trinidad Chambliss accounting for four combined touchdowns and the Rebels answering the Florida stumble with a statement. Missouri did its own demolition work, hammering Texas A&M 27-6 behind a defense that has quietly become one of the best in the league. So forget the records for a second — these are two teams playing their best football in the back half of October, and that makes this a genuine measuring-stick game for Pete Golding’s first Ole Miss team.

Missouri This Week

Eli Drinkwitz has the Tigers rolling at 5-1. Their only blemish is a 31-24 loss at Mississippi State back on September 26, and they’ve responded by winning three straight — including a 45-17 thumping of Florida and that Texas A&M shutout-level effort last weekend. Missouri doesn’t beat itself. They run it, they play physical defense, and they’ve climbed into the top 15 because they’ve earned it. Ole Miss has not seen a complete team quite like this since LSU came to town. The Rebels will have to win the line of scrimmage on both sides, because Missouri is built to drag you into a four-quarter street fight.

The Returning Rebel: Austin Simmons

Here’s the storyline that writes itself: Missouri’s starting quarterback is Austin Simmons, who began his career at Ole Miss before transferring to Columbia. Now he comes back to Vaught-Hemingway as the opposing QB1, and you can bet he’ll have this one circled. Simmons has the arm and the legs to stress a defense, and the Rebel secondary will need to keep everything in front of them. Expect a hostile Homecoming crowd to make life loud for him early. How Pete Golding’s defense handles a quarterback who knows this building — and badly wants a signature day in it — may be the single biggest key to Saturday.

What It Means for Ole Miss

At 4-1 and ranked No. 9, Ole Miss is right in the thick of the College Football Playoff conversation, and a home win over a top-15 Missouri team would be exactly the kind of result that holds up in December. Chambliss has been everything this offense needed, and with Kewan Lacy — a Doak Walker favorite — pounding behind him, the Rebels have the kind of balance that travels in November. But none of that matters if they don’t handle business at home first. Beat Missouri on Homecoming and this team is 5-1 with a marquee scalp and real momentum heading into the brutal stretch ahead. This is a program-defining opportunity for Golding, and it’s in Oxford. Let’s go win it.
