Trinidad Chambliss After Vanderbilt: “Second Half, Struggled Again”

Trinidad Chambliss accounted for four touchdowns on Saturday — three passing, one rushing — and Ole Miss led Vanderbilt 42-3 at halftime on the way to a 52-17 win. He went 20-of-30 for 213 yards with an interception. The first thing he wanted to talk about was the part that went wrong.

Offensively, I feel like we played good in the first half. Second half, struggled again. I feel like we were just sluggish and just kind of in a lull a little bit. And we got to fix that, because that’s not the standard. We got to finish the whole game and play all four quarters.

Ole Miss did not score in the third quarter, and Vanderbilt won the second half 14-10.

His own grade

I would say I did solid for the first half. Second half, came out just — wasn’t on top of my game. There’s a lot of room for improvement for me, just based off accuracy with ball location and also just reads. And staying super locked in throughout the game. It doesn’t matter what the score is. I’m trying to always have that mindset that it’s 0-0.

Asked whether this was as close to a four-quarter game as Ole Miss has played, he did not take the compliment. “You could say that, but honestly, I think we’re far from that. I feel like this team has a lot more potential and a lot more that they could do in a whole game.”

The streak kept going regardless. With three touchdown passes, Chambliss has thrown one in 18 straight games, pulling within one of Matt Corral’s 19.

Kewan Lacy back in the backfield

Lacy missed the Florida game and returned to score on a two-yard run in the first quarter.

It was good to have Five back there with me. You saw it off the first couple of drives — him making one dude miss and then creating an explosive run.

The receivers he named

With Deuce Alexander catching five passes for 74 yards and a 39-yard touchdown, Chambliss was asked who else has stepped up. He named three.

Obviously Deuce, but I would say Horatio Fields. He’s a solid big receiver. And then also Traylon Ray — he steps up and he proves that he should be on the field a lot more. And then also Johntay Cook. Those three guys have definitely stepped up, and they’re eager to learn. They’re eager to help me out as a quarterback.

The Traylon Ray line is worth holding onto: Pro Football Focus graded Ray as the best Ole Miss receiver of the day, on just 23 snaps.

Throwing to a defensive tackle

Chambliss’s second-quarter touchdown to defensive tackle Jamarious Brown — “JB,” he called him — was not as wide open as it looked.

Vandy actually covered it pretty well. The linebacker was underneath it, and then I kind of threw it up. So it was either JB was going to make a nice catch like he did, or it was going to be an incomplete pass. And JB went up and got it. Love when a big man scores.

He said he had not known about the celebration Brown and Will Echoles had planned. “It was awesome. I didn’t even know they had that.”

The second quarter, and the turnover that broke it open

Ole Miss scored 28 points in the second quarter. Chambliss pointed to the defense, and specifically to the strip-sack that Blake Purchase forced and Suntarine Perkins returned for a touchdown. “So glad that we got a big second quarter and kind of pushed away and separate ourselves from them.”

He also liked what he saw from the younger players late — backup quarterback Deuce Knight, who took over to open the fourth quarter, and Shekai Mills-Knight, who broke a 35-yard touchdown run.

Missouri, and an old teammate

Next is Missouri, with former Ole Miss quarterback Austin Simmons, who transferred to Columbia this offseason.

It’s about to be fun. Seeing the success they have is really cool to see. But it’s going to be fun to play them, and it’s going to be weird to see them in different colors and a different uniform. Missouri’s a really good team. They beat Florida. We ended up losing to Florida, and they got a good win against A&M today.

Ole Miss is 4-1, 2-1 in the SEC. Next up: Missouri at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Saturday, Oct. 17, at 2:30 p.m. CT. Hotty Toddy 🦈
