One Little Thing: Luke Hasz On Why The Ole Miss Run Game Hasn’t Clicked Yet

Ole Miss is 3-1 with a quarterback who threw for 363 yards against LSU, and the running game still has not looked like last season’s. Per Josh Pate’s numbers, the Rebels ran it 25 times for 63 yards in that LSU win. On Tuesday, tight end Luke Hasz was asked why. His answer was small on purpose.

“I think it’s gonna start clicking. I think a lot of it’s just been like one— like little details have been off. I mean, I can’t speak on much of it. I mean, it’s been just like one little thing.”

Hasz said the open week and this week’s practices went straight at it. Ole Miss is treating the run game as a physical problem, not a schematic one.

“We got after it last week. I know the defense got after it a lot, but we have too, like within the run game and stuff like that. … Each one of like our Tuesday, Wednesday practices is the most physical part of the week. So yeah, they’ve all been really physical.”

“I think everyone’s really bought in with being physical and finishing in the run game.”

Pete Golding had the whole team watch the Florida film together. Hasz said the offense took something specific from watching the other side of the ball.

“It’s definitely beneficial just because a lot of stuff that they’re coaching is stuff that we can work on as an offense to help us be better knowing like what their job is and stuff. And then just together as a team, just knowing that we have each other’s back, knowing like the things that happened during the game that they’re all correctable.”

Asked whether the team is still sitting in the Florida loss, he split it cleanly: the intensity stayed, and the doubt did not. “Our intensity during practice and stuff is kind of that way. But like with our confidence and stuff, like that’s kind of in the past.”

🏈 Two Tight Ends, And A Third Who Fits

An injury limited Hasz early last season. This year he has been in the rotation from the start, including two-tight-end sets with Caleb Odom.

“Being able to show that I can block and catch has been really exciting, but also just like playing this year like with all the guys that we play on … especially being in at the same time and like 12 personnel and stuff. So that’s been really fun.”

He saved his strongest words for Michael Smith, who has worked into the rotation: “Mike’s like the ultimate teammate … he’s super talented and the sky’s the limit for him.”

⚓ What He Sees In Vanderbilt

“They play hard. Especially just watching their defense, a lot of the guys fly around. It’s not always about like who the person is. They all just play extremely hard and have no quit in them.”
