How It Went
Vanderbilt jumped out 4-1 to open the match, and Ole Miss spent the rest of the first set chasing. The Rebels did get it back to even — kills from Carlton and Crook cut the deficit to one, and there were multiple ties and lead changes behind a Meyer kill and a block assist from Meyer and Carly Paugh. Then the Commodores ran off five of six points for a 15-11 edge at the media timeout, pushed it to 21-12 out of the break and closed it 25-16.
The second set was the one Ole Miss was in. Johnson came alive with four kills before the media timeout, and Vanderbilt carried only a one-point lead, 15-14, into the break. The Commodores stretched it to 18-15 to force an Ole Miss timeout, Meyer answered with a kill to cut it back to two, and Vanderbilt pulled away late to take it 25-20.
The third opened with the Rebels in front. A Meyer kill and an ace from Vivianna Samaniego built an 8-5 lead, but Vanderbilt tied it at 10-10, led 15-13 at the technical timeout and closed on a 5-2 run to finish the sweep 25-17.
The Margins
The hitting line tells the match. Vanderbilt put down 43 kills and hit .374; Ole Miss had 30 on .148. The Commodores also out-assisted the Rebels 41-26. Serving was the one column Ole Miss nearly held, six aces to seven.
