Ole Miss spent the SEC’s fifth week on a bye and still surfaced three times in a conference roundtable — twice as the measuring stick for another program’s quarterback. The weekend’s headline game sends No. 7 Alabama to No. 16 Mississippi State at 11 a.m. Central in Starkville, both teams unbeaten. Georgia is favored by 24.5 at Vanderbilt, Florida by 4.5 at Missouri.
The Locked On SEC host who convened the panel argued that the Starkville result reframes a question Ole Miss has owned all season. If Mississippi State’s quarterback opens 5-0, he said, “does Starkville have the best quarterback in the state of Mississippi?” Trinidad Chambliss “has gotten all this shine,” he argued, and the Mississippi State starter is already drawing the same devotion.
Chambliss came up again in the LSU segment. With Sam Leavitt playing hurt, the host said LSU is expected to start a small-school transfer, and that its fan base has begun asking whether he is “the next Trinidad” — a lower-division backup handed a Lane Kiffin offense. The Locked On Razorbacks host hoped aloud that LSU loses with him.
The third mention came from Vanderbilt’s side. The Locked On Vandy host called the loss at Auburn “very, very winnable” and said Vanderbilt “squandered it away,” then listed Ole Miss at the front of the stretch that follows Georgia. If Vanderbilt plays the way it did at Auburn, he said, “it’ll be over by halftime.”
Ole Miss returns from the bye at Vanderbilt on Oct. 10, which makes the Commodores’ next two weeks the Rebels’ best available film. The panel predicted Alabama survives a shootout in Starkville and Florida covers to reach 5-0. Nobody picked against Chambliss keeping the title he arrived with.
