The SEC availability report came out Wednesday and almost nobody covering this game has mentioned what is on it.
Six Ole Miss players are out for Saturday.
Dorian Barney, cornerback. Victor Lincoln Jr., cornerback. Ant Davis Jr., linebacker. JaMichael Garrett, linebacker. Jalan Chapman, offensive line. Emanuel Faulkner, offensive line.
Four more are questionable. Kewan Lacy, running back. Cedrick Beavers, cornerback. MJ Preston, safety. Craig Tutt, safety.
Now read those two lists again and count the positions.
Two corners out. A third corner questionable. Two safeties questionable. And Jalyn Crawford has turf toe, which Pete Golding described this week about as honestly as a coach can:
“That’s what it is, and it’s really tough at that position. If you can’t run and you play corner, you’re kind of a liability.”
That is six defensive backs either out, questionable, or playing hurt.
We have spent five straight days in this newsletter and on the show talking about Florida’s secondary. Their coordinator said it needs to get better. Their head coach said the last touchdown Auburn scored made him want to puke watching it. Auburn threw it thirty-five times and got two passes broken up. All of that is true and none of it has changed.
But Ole Miss is walking into The Swamp with a defensive backfield held together with tape, and the entire national conversation has been about the other guy’s problem.
There is a second thing on that list worth sitting with. Two offensive linemen are out.
Florida sacked Auburn’s quarterback seven times three weeks ago. Emmanuel Oyebadejo had two and a half. Jayden Woods had two and a half. Jon Sumrall called the pass rush the bright spot of that whole defense.
So the two units Ole Miss is thinnest at on Saturday are the secondary and the offensive line — and those happen to be the two places Florida is most likely to hurt you.
Sharif Denson and Antonio Kite came back against LSU and the difference was immediate. Jaylon Braxton ended that game with an interception in the red zone. The good version of this is real, and it is only five days old.
The other version is a ten-name availability report that reads like a warning.
