Trinidad Chambliss woke up this week as the Heisman favorite. CBS Sports moved him to the top of the board at +310 on Saturday night — past Arch Manning, past Jeremiah Smith, past everybody. Three games: 924 passing yards, nine total touchdowns, a Division II transfer who turned down Lane Kiffin and then beat him.
He has earned every word of it. But read the national write-ups closely and you will notice something odd. Several of them describe Saturday as Chambliss leading a comeback from a 24-7 deficit.
Ole Miss never trailed.
Here is what actually happened, from the official box score. Ole Miss led 24-7 at halftime. LSU scored 14 in the third quarter and cut it to 24-21. LSU kicked a field goal in the fourth to tie it 24-24. Chambliss then ran it in from 14 yards, Ole Miss converted two, and Jaylon Braxton intercepted a pass in the red zone with just over a minute left.
So the 24-7 was ours, and we gave all of it back.
That distinction matters more than it sounds, because it changes what the tape is telling us. A comeback win says your quarterback is a closer. A blown 17-point lead that your quarterback has to fix says something about the other forty-something players — and it is now the third week in a row it has happened in the same window.
Louisville. Charlotte. LSU. Three opponents, three completely different game scripts, one identical third quarter.
Pete Golding was asked about it Monday and did not reach for a single alibi:
“Sundays are about the truth. We did some really good things. You beat a good football team, but that’s just the first SEC game that we played. Are we where we want to be? No. I’m not going to sit here and lie to you.”
Four days from now that window opens again at 3:30 in the afternoon in Gainesville, against a team averaging 54 points a game, in a stadium with twenty straight sellouts where the third quarter is exactly when it gets loudest.
The Heisman board is a nice thing to wake up to. The third quarter is the thing that decides Saturday.
