Ole Miss 32, LSU 24 — and Stephen spent Saturday night’s Locked On Ole Miss saying what a lot of us were already thinking: when this team is rolling, it’s one of the best two or three in the country. The Rebels punished LSU in the first half, survived a weird third quarter, and let Trinidad Chambliss slam the door in the fourth, the way he always seems to. Stephen had been adamant all week that Ole Miss was the better team — he even called it close to the number, 35-31 — and the Rebels got there. Trinidad Chambliss is the best player in America
Stephen didn’t hedge it one bit: “He is the best player in America, and if he doesn’t win the Heisman Trophy, it’s because this team let him down.” Chambliss went 33-of-48 for 363 yards and two scores, and the play that defined the night was a 16-yard go-ahead touchdown run — a genuine Heisman moment against a defense everybody spent the week hyping as unstoppable. He had one interception, off a blitz, that helped spark LSU’s third-quarter comeback, but when the game hung in the balance in the fourth, Chambliss owned it. He’s now 10-0 at home, and the show’s point was simple: there is no close second at the quarterback position in college football right now.
Golding’s gutsy two-point call — and who got outcoached
The boldest coaching decision of the season so far came right after Chambliss’s go-ahead score, when Golding went for two to make it 32-24 instead of settling for a one-score lead. Stephen called it maybe the ballsiest call he’s ever seen on a football field — miss it, and LSU can tie or win with a touchdown and a kick. Instead, the hard count drew LSU offside twice and JT Lindsey punched it in. The bigger picture Stephen kept hammering: Golding, a head coach only since December, now has more career top-10 wins than Lane Kiffin, and Ole Miss has taken four of the last six in this series. On this night, in this building, the Rebels’ bench won the chess match.
John David Baker’s plan and a third receiver finally showing up
For all the Chambliss praise, Stephen gave real credit to offensive coordinator John David Baker, whose game plan he called flawless — Ole Miss threw for 363 yards even while running for just 63, and leaned into the pass when it had to. The receiver room finally found its third weapon: Traylon Ray broke out for 115 yards, Caleb Odom was flat-out unguardable, and Deuce Alexander was Deuce Alexander. And when Kewan Lacy left with an injury (Stephen relayed on air that the X-ray came back clean), JT Lindsey stepped in and ran hard — picking up big fourth downs and the two-point conversion. That kind of next-man-up night is exactly what a contender needs.
The honest caveat: four quarters, and Florida is next
Stephen wouldn’t let the celebration paper over the one real concern: Ole Miss still hasn’t put four clean quarters together. The third quarter got sloppy, LSU scored twice and tied it, and that’s the version of the Rebels that can get beat. Florida is next, on the road, and the show flagged it all night as a tougher matchup than this LSU game ever was. Ole Miss is 3-0, should land around top five come Monday, and keeps winning even without its best football — but the message into a short, emotional week was blunt: play like the first half and it won’t matter who’s across the field; play like the third quarter and Florida will make them pay.
