Four days to LSU, and if you spent Monday waiting for one of these two men to say something you could get angry about, you went to bed disappointed. Pete Golding and Lane Kiffin spent an hour and a half complimenting each other into the ground. That should worry you more than a grudge would.

Golding got asked about facing the staff he worked for for three and a half years, and he turned it into a tee time. “I love going against guys that I’ve worked with,” he said. “The competitive part, no different than you and your buddies going to play golf.”
Kiffin opened his own press conference by deflating the entire premise before anybody could build on it. “I know obviously a lot’s gonna be made about me, but this is about the players. Pete’s not gonna tackle anybody. I’m not gonna throw any touchdowns.” Then he told the story of Nick Saban interviewing Golding — and said it was the most impressive interview Saban had ever seen. Four days before he has to play him.
And then each of them handed the other the advantage. Kiffin says the familiarity favors Ole Miss, because Golding spent three years hearing what Kiffin hates to play against, and a head coach tells his coordinator that in a way a coordinator never tells a head coach. Golding says knowing somebody that well is a trap that makes you overthink. One calls it a weapon. The other calls it a trap. Same three and a half years.
That is a respect-off. And a respect-off means neither building gets to spend this week running on the cheap stuff.

He compared the Trinidad Chambliss–Kewan Lacy backfield to Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush. He told his own locker room the pressure is not on them.
Here is the honest part, because it does not work without it: every single thing he said is true. Chambliss was the hottest quarterback in America down the stretch. Lacy ran for 1,567 yards and 24 scores. Carneiro hit from 57 on Saturday and from 62 in camp. Kiffin did not have to stretch a single word of it.
That is what makes it work. He is not lying. He is aiming the truth — and he has run this exact play before.

A grudge is cheap fuel. Neither staff handed the other one. Saturday gets decided by about four plays.
📣 The Players Already Moved On
Everybody in Mississippi has an opinion about Saturday night except the guys who actually have to play it.
I went back through both player podiums from the Charlotte game looking for one line about Lane Kiffin. One line about December. There is almost nothing there.
Chambliss on the entire circus: “It’s going to be a crazy weekend in Oxford, but it’s just another game.” On seeing his old head coach and his old offensive coordinator: “It’s going to be weird. It is what it is.” Six words, and then he explains it — he has been seeing Pete Golding and John David Baker every single day for eight months. He is used to them. He says he loves seeing them.
That is not a quarterback dodging. That is a quarterback telling you this staff has been his staff since January, and the other guys are the ones who left. He moved on eight months ago. The rest of us are still arguing about December.
The one thing that locker room looked back at was Deuce Knight’s hurdle — which Chambliss says Knight had been promising all week he would do.
