TOLEDO, Ohio — The No. 19 Ole Miss men’s golf team could not find the same footing it had on Sunday. The Rebels posted a 23-over 307 in the second round of the Inverness Intercollegiate on Monday and dropped to 17th in the 18-team field, sitting at 38-over 606 through 36 holes.
The Slide
Ole Miss opened the tournament tied for 12th at 15-over. The second round came in eight shots worse than the first, and that was the difference between the middle of the field and the bottom of it. The Donald Ross layout at Inverness Club had already held the entire field to a single under-par team score in round one, and it did not loosen its grip on the Rebels.
Claycomb Is Still the One
Cooper Claycomb again gave Ole Miss its best card. He signed for a 3-over 74 and is tied for 20th individually at 3-over for the tournament — the only Rebel inside the top 20 and the only one who has kept his total in single digits. Claycomb opened his Ole Miss career at even par on Sunday, so through two rounds his debut remains the one thing on this leaderboard going the right direction.
The Rest of the Card
- Collins Trolio — 5-over 76, tied for 69th at 11-over
- Eduardo Matarazzo — 6-over 77, tied for 69th at 11-over
- Tomas Restrepo — 9-over round, tied for 82nd at 13-over
- Finn Meister — tied for 87th
Trolio and Matarazzo reached the same number from opposite directions. Trolio was 6-over after one round and Matarazzo 5-over; on Monday they traded those scores exactly — Trolio a 5-over 76, Matarazzo a 6-over 77 — and finished the day tied at 11-over.
